Why Hawkwatching is So Awesome

People whoever they are (even the most experienced of hawkwatchers) love Bald Eagles – it’s just a given. In my experience if you show a non or novice birder their first Bald Eagle and they will be amazed, show someone their first Thayer’s Gull and they aren’t likely to gasp (sorry, larophiles)!

Best Bird of the Weekend (Second of September 2011)

The best birds of my weekend were Seahawks, Eagles, Falcons, Cardinals, And Ravens. There was the White Ibis in New Jersey , the Caspian Tern , the Buff-bellied Sandpiper , another White Ibis , this one in New York’s Orange County, a Bald Eagle , and a host of other birds.

Obviously, Bald Eagles are a pretty big deal too. Those bigger birds of prey command respect, but it’s not like falcons are unknown. Even outside of Atlanta , Peregrine Falcons spend their breeding seasons smiling for the ( web ) camera from atop edifices all across the country.

New Zealand’s Other Eagle

And eagles. New Zealand had eagles. Today, by way of birds of prey New Zealand is somewhat deficient, having a small and attractive falcon and a floppy-winged harrier, and that’s about it. Yes, the Chatham Island Sea Eagle was just a Bald Eagle, collected in America and misidentified due to poor record keeping.

The photo blind at Delevan National Wildlife Refuge gave me this close up of a Peregrine Falcon ( Falco peregrinus ). The featured image above was taken from photo blind #1 at Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge (SNWR).
