On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. In 2023 I attempted to keep a year list of mammal encounters: the list barely exceeded 20 species, while it became complicated by seeing bats and voles that I was unable to name specifically.

The results suggest that grasslands, often populated by diverse species of grass as well as wildflowers, tend to support more varieties of birds, including declining species like Dickcissels. And here in Europe, they are the real deal, an indigenous species and not domesticated animals gone wild. Annex II of the Bern Convention lists 45 of Beljarica’s bird species, with a further 91 species in Annex III. Finally, 24 species in Annex I of the EU Bird Directive were recorded in this area.

Badgers are being caught for dog-baiting. A bird species is near extinction. The Brits are known for their animal rights activism, but there's been a rise in wildlife crime against all animals. Apparently they are seen as nuisances. Bats are being targeted.

Despite mostly guiding them, I still somehow managed to see a European Badger sitting and watching me back for several seconds, before it slipped into bushes and quite a few White-tailed Eagles , e.g. four in just one morning. In all that swirling of swallows, I am not certain was there a third species, so I keep watching. Supposedly, in Spring this area is teeming with migrating passerines, but in September, I recorded a mere dozen species, including very numerous Red-backed Shrikes (9 in this area alone). eBird hotspots of Prespa lakes. Practicalities.

Vipers dominated, as well as some smaller snakes, but we also found a Sunda Stink-badger and a sleeping Hooded Pitta. We found some more sleeping birds, lots of frogs, and a Lesser Mousedeer – a new species for me! Best of all, the guide moved on quickly from things like the pitta rather than disturb it.
