Breeding Crested Pigeons in Broome

Crested Pigeons – Ocyphaps lophotes are very widespread throughout Australia and can easily be observed in Broome on the streetlights on a wintery morning. The Crested Pigeon family remained in the tree away from danger for quite some time with both parents present.

Yellow-billed Spoonbills breeding

They are widespread throughout Australia , but it does not mean you necessarily easily observe them. There was an island in the middle of the river and the tall trees held Yellow-billed Spoonbill nests and there were several families within the vicinity. Yellow-billed Spoonbill family. This year we have had high numbers of Magpie Geese once again in the Broome area and this last weekend we observed our first family groups for the season. We continue to bird-watch from the bitumen and rain continues to fall across the north of Australia.

Pied Oystercatcher breeding season is here again!

In another year when time stands still when you are not allowed to move freely around Australia or overseas some things happen like clockwork. The eggs hatched out around 20th June after 28 days of incubation and the Pied Oystercatcher family were soon on the move. Adult Pied Oystercatcher and two chicks’ footprints in the sand.

Pied Butcherbird family

We have been observing the Tawny Frogmouth family again during the week at the same park in Broome. There are also two Pied Butcherbird families in the park and they are also growing fast. Tawny Frogmouths breeding again

I didn’t hang around, but took a few photos to capture the Tawny Frogmouth family that has once again bred close to home. We first noticed the odd eye in April this year, but it does not appear to bother it and it can still feed and obviously breed too. Tawny Frogmouth family. Tawny Frogmouth with an odd right eye.
