Alkborough Flats is an excellent place to go birding and walking and is where the River Trent and River Ouse join to meet the River Humber. Bird hides have been built and two small car-parks and one of these has wheelchair access to the trails. Alkborough Flats sign at top car-park. Pied Avocet in front of the hide.

Last Sunday was Grant’s birthday and we decided to bird our local area in search of something special. I noticed a silhouette and we investigated and we got our first Pallid Cuckoo for the year. We discovered another juvenile not far away, so other species have had their eggs swapped out.

This cyclone has been named Cyclone Iggy and is a dominant circle on our satellite image of Western Australia. The birds will be dispersing across the country and our garden has been rather quiet since the rain started. A wet garden without birds! We took the opportunity to just observe the birds and their antics.

In Australia we often observe Peregrine Falcons and they are the subspecies Falco peregrinus macropus. The general consensus among birders is that this particular Peregrine Falcon is a different sub species and is most likely Falco peregrinus calidus. Our recent camping and birding adventure that took us along the remote Duncan Road saw us stopping at the Negri River for an extended period. The Negri River starts in the Northern Territory and flows into Western Australia and it then merges with the Ord River and flows into Lake Argyle. Freshwater crocodile.

You just have to go birding on your birthday really, because you never know what might show up. Langi Crossing is always a great place for birds, but they do vary on each visit. On our recent trip to Kununurra on the Western Australia/Northern Territory border we camped right next to the Hidden Valley National Park , because you are not allowed to camp in the park itself. This park in Kununurra is like a very miniature Bungle Bungles and we had hoped to find two specific birds in the park.

In fact one of our pairs was doing just that as we headed north to check on not only the Pied Oystercatchers , but any other birds in the area. Thousands of migratory shorebirds are returning to Broome now and any place along the coast is good for birding. As we approached she returned to the water and then back to the egg.

Among the various birding walks I have made this week I have been back to Albert Park to see all of the Black Swans and other birds, with a detour to the coast at Port Phillip Bay. We had not seen any other “bush birds” until this point and it did not take long and we had interest in the fresh water from other species. The next surprise was an Australian Pipit that walked in and investigated. It watched the other birds for some time and then jumped in! Zebra Finch drinking and bathing.

We still observed 45 species of birds in the reserve in about an hour and there are always raptors to observe as well as the usual water birds. The small crocodile positions itself near the larger crocodile eating the Magpie Goose and a Black-necked Stork comes over to investigate what is going on.

Last Sunday Grant was able to leave work in the afternoon and I had researched options of places we could get to within one hour of the city of Melbourne using public transport that would offer us some birding opportunities.
