The road towards Geikie Gorge from Fitzroy Crossing is also worth taking slowly because there are some good species to be observed. I photographed one to show the brightness displayed, but for a better look at this species you can look here. A Grey Shrike-thrush was vocal and investigating the area that we chose to sit for our lunch.

This cyclone has been named Cyclone Iggy and is a dominant circle on our satellite image of Western Australia. There are very few areas in Roebuck Bay that shorebirds can roost on very high tides due to the cliffs and many of the larger species will go out onto the land behind the mangroves.

For example on my trip to Australia earlier this year I borrowed the car one day to drive to Ku-Ring-Gai National Park, a location that proved fruitful for Clare later in the year. I only saw a few species I could get in the small park near where I was staying, and not even as many as I could have gotten there.

Fresh water crocodiles enjoying the sunshine We chose to have a wander around the area, which is actually a lagoon at this time of year and totalled 39 species in an hour even mid-morning. There were even more species present here and a perfect place for a picnic lunch.

In Australia we often observe Peregrine Falcons and they are the subspecies Falco peregrinus macropus. The general consensus among birders is that this particular Peregrine Falcon is a different sub species and is most likely Falco peregrinus calidus. The Peregrine Falcon acknowledged my presence on the grass as it peered down on me!

It was actually ten years ago that we observed our first Painted Snipe in Australia on Grant’s birthday! There is a good mix of bird species both large and small. Goanna investigating the drop-off. On our recent trip to Kununurra on the Western Australia/Northern Territory border we camped right next to the Hidden Valley National Park , because you are not allowed to camp in the park itself. This was a species we were hoping for in the park-a White-quilled Rock-Pigeon!

The Negri River starts in the Northern Territory and flows into Western Australia and it then merges with the Ord River and flows into Lake Argyle. They were even investigating an old fire pit, which was interesting to observe. All of the finch species were in good numbers and undisturbed by our presence. Crimson Finch.

I actually managed to enter the area close to the lake this week through one of the pedestrian tunnels and there were numerous Martin species nests along the pipe near the upper part of the tunnel. Martin species nest in a tunnel. Birding Australia Australian birds Melbourne' Long-billed Corella.

We had not seen any other “bush birds” until this point and it did not take long and we had interest in the fresh water from other species. The next surprise was an Australian Pipit that walked in and investigated. A Willie Wagtail was soon at the water and taking advantage of the treat. Willie Wagtail and Zebra Finch.

We have actually been observing this species at this location a bit more often this year than other years, but it is always alone. I investigated where the Beach Stone-curlew had been and noticed it had recently deposited a small pile of waste.

We still observed 45 species of birds in the reserve in about an hour and there are always raptors to observe as well as the usual water birds. The small crocodile positions itself near the larger crocodile eating the Magpie Goose and a Black-necked Stork comes over to investigate what is going on. Smaller crocodile moving in.
