Sometimes in a forest you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nothing but birds, monkeys and squirrels (and mosquitos, obviously), and then at night you start seeing civets, wallabies, and tarantulas. We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. Considering the fact that her lake lies conveniently close to the Moharli Gate, I suppose Telia would be the biggest earner of all the animals of Tadoba.

Ahead of the first trip, I wasn’t thinking much about mammals, and yet, you cannot miss them, from Nilgais near villages to Indian Flying Foxes in town centres, not to mention those ubiquitous and irresistibly cute Palm Squirrels eating seeds left for parakeets. On that first trip, I even saw some of the last 500 (Asiatic) Lions !

Animals of Kruger National Park by Keith Barnes is the animal guide I wish I had when I visited South Africa. It would have been useful to have more information about the rest camps that define each route, but I understand that there is a fine line (maybe even a broad one) between writing an animal guide and a tourist guide.

The researchers divided the city’s land area into seven categories: (1) open space for conservation ( e.g., forest preserves), (2) open space for recreation, (3) other open spaces ( e.g. , trails/greenways and cemeteries), (4) water, (5) single family residential, (6) multifamily residential, (7) roads, and (8) all others. Each year Hog Island offers programs, taught by a stellar staff of naturalists and artists, to groups of all kinds (teenagers, adults, families). Actually, I was bested by an entire group of teenagers, all gathered – along with 36 adults – on Hog Island , Audubon’s famous camp off the coast of Maine.

Location, location, location – some practical advice for River Lapwings aiming to have a family: “ River Lapwing nests on open, unvegetated river banks achieved significantly greater nesting success than those in crop fields” ( source ). These strange birds are two species in their own family; White-necked or Yellow-headed, endemic to the Upper Guinea forests and Grey-necked or Red-headed, restricted to Lower Guinea forests. Whilst in Atewa Range Forest Reserve, a hunter passed us deep in the forest and I asked him to show us his night’s catch.

This is not to say, however, that birders on holiday are, should they choose to travel with family, friends or other assorted loved ones, resigned to seeing nothing, or even nothing except the common stuff.
