Ka’ena Point is also a breeding ground for the Federally protected Laysan albatross, where 45 nests were being carefully monitored by the non-profit Pacific Rim Conservation. The oldest Laysan albatross was last seen raising a chick on Midway Atoll in 2016, at age 66. People do not work with wildlife for fame and fortune.

The sea is never far away wherever you are in the Falklands: my diary records “a constant passage of Black-browed Albatrosses, hundreds of birds as far as the horizon, their white undersides catching the sun [ the weather must have cheered up! ] as they sheered into the wind. Re-reading my diary all these years later, it sounds pretty good.

These remote islands, some more than 1,000 miles from Honolulu, are home to huge globally-significant colonies of Laysan and Black-footed Albatross, among many others. Many of these islands are part of the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge and one of the most important areas is Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.

Black-footed Albatross : The most common albatross off the west coast, virtually all of the world’s Black-footed Albatross also breed in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, on the same islands as the Laysan Albatross on Hawaiian Islands NWR and Midway Atoll NWR.
