Birding the Ndumo area, South Africa

Ndumo Game Reserve lies in the Easternmost part of South Africa, close to the border of Mozambique and Eswatini. It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve: the Gaur Morning

In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road. Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. There is something written on those pages… written by tiger claws. February 2013. And we are in it.

Well, they were all memorable, but these two involve subjects people have asked about without fail—the Taj Mahal and Tigers. Target: Tigers. The species is crepuscular and nocturnal, but can sometimes be seen during the day.

The Nemesis Cat Defeated!

For there is no species that I had more comprehensively failed to see than the Leopard. Most gallingly of all, I had actually stood next to someone that saw one, jumping into a tree to escape a Tiger of all things, and failed to see it. Leopards were problem species for me. The cats are, almost to a species, elusive.
