Three endangered Malayan tiger cubs were born at Busch Gardens Tampa Sunday, March 31. These births are critical to help preserve the species. Malayan tigers are critically endangered. These newborn cubs will add to the genetic diversity of the Malayan tiger population and contribute to conservation efforts for the species.

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. A tin yellow tiger is staring at us from the Melghat Tiger Reserve gates, as the narrow tarmac road winds through teak forest ( Tectona grandis ) along the hillside. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

The area is known for being a breeding area of the enigmatic Rufous Crab-Hawk and it was the first place I saw the species, many years ago. On our journey back, we tried again by a couple forested bridges for any glimpse of a Rufescent Tiger-Heron , but no luck on that front. Rufous Crab-Hawk. Maybe another time. Such is birding.

Last year, in November, I notched up a dozen species of butterflies, an impressive total anywhere in Europe so late in the year. A Kerkini mini-tiger Disappointingly, mammal encounters are few, other than the odd Roe Deer. It was photographed on the east embankment. Despite appearances, they are remarkably docile.

Most gallingly of all, I had actually stood next to someone that saw one, jumping into a tree to escape a Tiger of all things, and failed to see it. Leopards were problem species for me. I have long thought that the Cape May Warbler should have its common name changed to match its scientific name, Setophaga tigrina , because “ Tiger Warbler ” is a much cooler name. This bird, though peaceful looking, definitely was a tiger.

That is unfortunate because the Tiger Warbler * is one wood-warbler worth watching. The sighting was easily the best I have ever had of the species, and it was in and out of view for about twenty minutes, foraging in small circuits but always coming back to the stand of thick brush where I had first spotted it.
