I’m focusing on Turkey Vultures here because they are undoubtedly the species most birders in North America (the home of 10kB) are most familiar with, but the name vulture applies to birds found around the globe. The Black-headed Gull , Larus ridibunus, is similar in many ways to Bonaparte’s Gull , Larus philadelphia of North America. Note the long legs and red bill of the breeding-ready Black-headed Gull below. They breed noisily and colonially at large lakes with reed beds and marshy areas.

But its not just parrots that are doing well in their adopted city. Some uncountable species, like Mitred Parakeets , are in fact way more numerous than some of the countable species and they are clearly breeding in well-established populations. Nanday or Black-hooded Parakeets have recently been accepted as countable by the ABA.

Long before that time Mexican domesticated Turkeys had been adopted by Native Americans in the American Southwest as well. The chance that this was a real Turkey are not great, and the chance that Columbus actually brought breeding stock from Honduras to Spain is not great, so maybe, maybe not. According to R.D. The variety of plumages that they show and the way different individuals molt at different times is interesting to me and I have stopped being surprised at seeing a small flock of ruddies with some nearly in full breeding, or alternate plumage, while others are still in their basic, or non-breeding plumage.

Outside of the breeding season a few birds may join together in a loose flock if the feeding is good. The nom de blog Redgannet was adopted to add an air of mystery and to make himself more attractive to women. To describe the back as grey makes it sound very drab, but in good light it takes on a bluish hue. Great shots!
