The Juniper Titmouse ( Baeolophus ridgwayi ) is a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae. You can also see my 10000 Birds post on the Oak Titmouse here. I asked a group of wildlife rehabilitators: “What are some of the Worst Bird Myths? Had they been able to make the jawbone talk, no doubt its first words would be, “You can’t put a baby bird back in the nest, because the parents will smell your hands and abandon it.”. Songbirds eat bugs, and raptors eat whole birds/animals.

Among all the birding locations I have found, Pino Real was my first love. I was just getting back into birding, and had only gone to some urban sites, during 2012 and 2013. And this was once a wonderful patch of bird-rich understory. I would have guessed it would be the first species to abandon this now-disturbed site.

The loss of the Passenger Pigeon stings because of the impossible descriptions of the bird’s abundance. But imagine those flocks are verdant green, a color unmatched by any native bird currently in North American (north of Mexico, of course). Barreling into your feeder with reckless abandon and cleaning you right out.

Birding in Florida is unique in that so much of that state’s plenty is evident even to the casual observer. It’s a family vacation, sure, but there’s always time for birding and in Florida, the birding often finds you. One had a cluster of recently fledged birds and their nonplussed parent.

After our brief trip thru the great state of Texas, we were headed back into New Mexico, a state I was quite excited to explore. I have been all around the western states, here and there, but never spent any time in New Mexico. Our next stop was another mutually agreed upon stop, Albuquerque New Mexico. This was a first!

This week marks the 2-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Oil begins to wash up on the beaches throughout May and June of 2010 May 6, 2010 Oil washes ashore on the Chandeleur Islands off the Louisiana coast, an important nesting and breeding area for many bird species.

The species ranges north well into Canada in the summer months, but in the winter they make for the southern coasts or down to Mexico. They may gather in flocks of hundreds during their fall journey, abandoning their lonely summer habits. P.S. Back to actual birds next week! So the Hoary Bat is migratory.

The United States built Fort Jefferson on Garden Key between 1846 to 1875 to protect its interests in the Gulf of Mexico, but was later abandoned without ever being fully completed. While inspecting the vegetation, it always pays to check twice as exhausted birds are constantly landing on the islands throughout the day and night.
