A pair of flyover American Black Ducks , a flock of Green-winged Teal winging west way out over the ocean, and surprisingly, all three of our expected falcon species were all seen relatively early in the morning. But Matthieu arrived eventually and we kept adding birds. The birders kept coming too!

On December 7th an odd looking Peregrine Falcon was observed in Broome at the Sports Ova l. In Australia we often observe Peregrine Falcons and they are the subspecies Falco peregrinus macropus. The Peregrine Falcon at the Sports Oval has been perching on the light towers and is easily observed, but it is a long way up.

Here are some of the New York State birds that 10,000 Birds readers think of as memorable, and the great stories about how and when they saw them: Winston Poon selected Northern Waterthrush, which he saw at Rockefeller State Preserve on May 16, 2016. Within 15 minutes the Gyrfalcon flew in. Not only did it fly in but it attacked a Bald Eagle!

The 2016 tide chart is also useful if you want to see the dinosaur footprints at Gantheaume Point, because you need the tide to be below 2.16m for them to be visible and due care is required over slippery rocks. The night time tides are not quite as high in this series, but the shorebirds will still roost on Cable Beach.

A brief personal digression: I moved back into the house I grew up in back in 2014, my parents vacated at the end of 2016. In a couple weeks I’ll be keeping my ears alert for the flight calls of incoming shorebirds, they shall definitely be followed by a Peregrine Falcon. One of my main projects has been our yard here at home.

This compares with 171 checklists for 855 species in Jan 2016. 45 species (including the Pin-tailed Sandgrouse above) that evaded the beats’ coordinated binocular waving during 2016 have been added to the cumulative total to bring the tally since January 1st 2016 to 2692.
