One or two Tufted Ducks show up at Lake Merritt in Oakland every year, with this drake in particular often lending itself for soul-satisfying views. After lazing in the heat I decided to visit the forest pools one last time, hoping for another sighting of Hartlaub’s Duck or White-bellied Kingfisher. On a totally ordinary Toledo afternoon when I was visiting my favorite Metropark, there he was: a spectacular indigo minding his own business at one of the wildlife center’s birdfeeders.

I photographed the first of only two Northern Parulas ever reported in my state, way back in 2013. Like the previous park, there were no ducks, coots, or grebes to be seen. Still, this sort of wildlife experience is available in pretty much any Mexican city. But it is a private property, to which I don’t have access.

It turns out that duck nests tend to be so similar that you need to identify the feathers lining the nest, usually the breast feathers of the parent, to identify the user.
