Rufous Hummingbird Male in Northern California

According to Macauley Library’s migration map the overwhelming breeding activity for this species occurs north of the state of California. This is a photo of a female who showed up in August of 2012 with some juveniles. The thing is, I have females that have been hanging around also.

Black-backed Woodpeckers and Forest Fires in California and the West

It was July of 2012. I didn’t know what species of woodpecker it was, but I knew it was just in the clearing on the other side of the road. Black-backed Woodpeckers are non-migratory, although there have been documented intermittent irruptions of the species outside their normal range. It was a cool 48 degrees.

My Year in Birding 2012

Seeing 525 species was nice, as was the fact that I birded in four countries, nine of the fifty states in the United States, and fifty-one counties. I had some goals for this year as well, goals which I laid out in the introduction to my 2012 year list. Finally, my 2012 Year List easily exceeded the 500 species I had hoped to see.

What’s the Next ABA-Countable Exotic?

In February of 2013, I wrote a piece outlining my thoughts on which exotic bird species should be added to the American Bird Association (ABA) checklist. In 2014, the Florida Ornithological Society Records Committee (FOSRC) voted to add this species to the Florida state list. Egyptian Goose sightings submitted to eBird in 2011-2012.

It was apparently all the way back in 2012, when I was first getting back into birding after a 30 year hiatus, that I took a sad little picture, with my sad little camera, of a cute little bird that seemed to not show up anywhere at all in my field guide. What I didn’t know was that this is a very special species. Still, sorry!
