Summer birding gets a bad rap, especially around here, but July offers one highlight. I saw a few shorebirds myself this weekend, but was more amused by a House Sparrow. I tracked the call to an obstructed corner of the room and encouraged the kids to tune out the endless plaintive cry of what I guessed to be a juvenile House Sparrow.

In 2007 I was working in a university building that was just begging for bird feeders. This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. My latest addition, a Parasitic Jaeger off the coast, finally got me to my 289th bird, well over a year since I got my 279th. Twitching is a British term used to mean “the pursuit of a previously located rare bird.” Basically, I never had the time to chase birds. My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count.

Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Whimbrel – Undoubtedly this is the easiest bird left for me to find in Queens. Sedge Wren – This is a bird that rarely shows up on the coast in fall migration. Sooty Shearwater – This will take some more dedicated seawatching.

Both states were new to me in terms of eBird, so I had never visited Bombay Hook NWR , which made my list of the Top 25 NWRs for Birding. Two of those birds were lifers ( Worm-eating Warbler and Grasshopper Sparrow ). were new to me.
