It doesn’t always offer the most interesting set of birds, but it is nearby. The voice isn’t very musical — it sounds a bit like the wind-up of a tornado alarm — but the bird who owns it is called a “spectacular, large vireo” by eBird, and I agree. The call belonged to a Chestnut-sided Shrike-Vireo.

Some redpolls should get south to usual southern parts of their winter range such as the Atlantic Provinces and Ontario’s Algonquin Park (Latitude 45.5), where redpolls have been recorded on 33 of 39 Algonquin Christmas Bird Counts. Golden Crownbeard spreads like, well, weeds, in thick mats that crowd birds out of potential nesting sites. Between 2012 and 2013, populations of Laysan and Black-footed Albatrosses at Midway reached near-record levels.

Tropical Kingbird is likely to be one of the last birds I see in 2012 and first I see in 2013. Not a hard bird to come by in Costa Rica. Over the last ten years my average first phoebe has been the 22nd of March, meaning that this year’s bird was five days earlier than average and nearly two weeks earlier than last year’s. Hebron Cemetery (just above) but that was clearly a bird attempting to winter, not a two-month-early migrant. 2013 – 24 March.

The volume and variety of wood-warblers that are regularly seen in spring migration there rival or best anywhere else in the world that the birds are seen. No, in fall there are less birds, mostly those caught out over the lake as dawn broke. Wood-warblers drip from the trees, feed on the boardwalk, and sing at close range.

At this time of year in Broome there are often Swinhoe’s Snipe present at the Poo Ponds, but they are elusive and they did not make it onto my 2013 list. I did have the pleasure of finding a Latham’s Snipe in Queensland on February 14th 2013, though and a pair of Painted Snipe near Broome on August 4th 2013.
