Way back on 16 May I managed to see my 312 bird species in Queens to add to my Queens list. Somehow I forgot that the last time I predicted what the next ten species I would see in Queens would be was back on 30 December 2013, when my list was sitting at 302. The godwit was my forty-first shorebird species in Queens.).

On May 2nd we bush walked to an ephemeral lake approximately 55 kilometres/34 miles from Broome with my Mum, who also enjoys birds and walking, to find more ducks present than on our previous visit a couple of weeks ago. Looking across to the far side of the lake we noticed a very large duck and it was swimming close to the edge.

The press material says it covers over 800 species, so you know I had to do a count.

The first time we ever observed an Australian Painted Snipe was on Grant’s birthday in 2011 near Broome and since then we have had numerous other encounters, but this year for the first time we have seen them both nesting and with young. Four eggs in the Australian Painted Snipe nest. Three swimming Australian Painted Snipe.

I wrote about our second holiday in Tasmania in 2011 and I would recommend a few weeks travelling around the island to truly enjoy all that it has to offer. Ducks of Herdsman Lake. More than three hundred bird species have been recorded in Broome and there is plenty of variety. Here are some links to some of those bird species.

Over the winter, the universe lost four whooping cranes to what appears to be recreational shooting: three gunned down together in Georgia on December 30, 2010, and another in Alabama on January 28, 2011. It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. Speculation is useless in acts of vandalism.

My birding adventures this week, while Western, were far from Interior (three words for you: Black-bellied Whistling Duck ). At first I was surprised by some of the species that weren’t there, quite common and noticeable birds like the Great Blue Heron and Mute Swan.

The Little Egret walks in front of her, a dozen Lesser Whistling Ducks flies noisily low above water and through a flooded grass wades one Black-winged Stilt. In 2012, the Hindustani Times claimed that from January 2011 to June 2012, a further 9 tigers were killed in the Tadoba buffer zone. Very dusty Swarovski CLs.

The first book in the series, The Crossley ID Guide: Eastern Birds , exploded onto the birding scene in 2011. The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) has documented 596 bird species in the wild as at 1 January 2013; 265 are listed as Accidental, 59 as Scarce Visitor, and 2 as Extinct. Birders loved it or hated it or were just confused.

As 2012 draws to a close we here at 10,000 Birds thought that it would be a great idea if we, like we did in 2010 and 2011 , shared our Best Birds of the Year. Felonious Jive really likes a ravishing returning rarity – a Falcated Duck. This bird represented only the second documented record of this species in Florida.

There is also text, distribution maps, a dark red bar “warning” about similar looking rare species, and conservation symbols.
