Given how far Hokkaido is from Europe, it seems a bit surprising how many bird species wintering on this Japanese island have a name starting with “Eurasian” Or how many of these species I have also seen in my parents’ garden in Germany. Like the Eurasian Nuthatch. It keeps itself busy in winter – according to the HBW, “In winter months spends up to 90% of time in gathering food.” No wonder then that the life of nuthatches tends to be short.

The quiet village of Moco-moco in southwest Guyana was the most southerly point of our sojourn into the landlocked country some months ago. Myself and dear friend Leon blitzed across the savanna in the pre-dawn pinks and purples en route to this village as I strained my eyes trying to pick any birds from the landscape. Much of the land was parched and brown, the vegetation was stunted and windswept.

I wanted to share. I’m working outside on a project, and a robin has her nest in a tall shrub, not ten feet away from me. Every time I pass she flies out and scares me. Which seems fair. A few days ago she did not fly away, and sang the most beautiful songs all day long in her nest. The next day I heard little ones peeping for food! Was she singing to help them break out of their shells, was she singing to her brood?

During our recent California trip, I enjoyed some excellent birding. I also developed my latest manifestation of a series of skin infections that I have experienced over the past year, this one worse than all its predecessors. (Not a sugar problem, in case anyone thought of that; my fasting sugar levels are perfectly healthy.) Believe me, Staphylococcus aurea is not the kind of species I would choose to write about on 10,000 Birds.

Actually, Eliza Doolittle would be pleased to know it doesn’t always stay just there. When I drove to Xábia at the end of April to visit my brother at his new house the rain was pretty much everywhere in Spain. After a long drought this was welcome news for the Spanish people, but for me it was a bit sour grapes. Finally going out to find me a Moustached Warbler and it’s raining.

In my younger days I was very keen on what is generally known as Big Day Birding, or trying to see as many species of birds as possible in one day. In 1983 I co-wrote a book about a one-day, 24-hour competitive birdwatch that I took part in. Called The Big Bird Race , it tells the story of how my team, representing Country Life magazine , recorded 155 species in 24 hours in East Anglia (Suffolk and Norfolk).

I had just pulled in to my driveway around 11 pm and i saw an animal illuminated by my headlights. It looked like a raccoon in shape and color, but had no stripes that i could see, it was larger and had a short tail. I thought maybe a bobcat but that wouldn’t make sense as I live in town in central Minnesota. When it saw me it stared for a while then ran up a tree.

So my cat brought home that poor lil fella, and i'd need some advice in urgence please. So i know it's a bad Idea to feed or give him water. I put him in a cardbox with some toilet paper for extra heat because it looks like he was cold, then I put him in a tree for his parents to come search for him. The problem is that is doesn't chirp at all, he is suppose to chirp if he want is parents to search him, no ?

I’ll start by saying yes it was a drunk thought that came of a strange conversation but I couldn’t find an answer that satisfied me. Morality aside and purely hypothetical, what would happen? Would it manifest the same issues that are seen in humans or what? Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is a terrible thing and I am not advocating for anyone to test this, just if someone back before we realized it was bad tested this.

It's been in the rain for a while I think. I put it in a dark & closed off space outside to hopefully help it regain some warmth and keep it away from our cat since I can't bring it inside. It's in a box with paper towels with the lid pulled up a bit for air. Should i give it food, change up the box?? I intend to bring it to the woods when it's a bit more active but scared it'll run away on our patio.

Me and my friend were outside just enjoying the night. We saw a mouse and my friend wanted to throw a stick at it, I told him not to since the mouse was just living life. He did it anyways and hit it on the butt, pretty hard. It started shaking for about 10 seconds then it went completely limp. I felt so bad so I went home. I’ve heard mice carry diseases so should I be feeling bad for it dying?

A few days ago, I found a young crow in my backyard. It was trapped between my fence and my neighbor’s fence. I got it free and perched it atop the fence so it could go on its way (while Mommy and Daddy crow were screaming at me / baby). Since then, I’ve had to help it out of my yard three times. Mom and Dad were always nearby and made their presence known.

For some reason I remember hearing about this spider I heard it eats big animals. It's a large spider that has a little secondary spider or other type of animal that's attached to its sense of tracking and hunting other animals. I heard it will go after anything that kills the little spider or eats it just to retrieve it's body. I ate a little spider without trying to and I drank about 2 liters of apple juice to try and kill it and it was trying to crawl back out of my stomach throug

In The Last of Us video game, there are two scenes where they show exotic animals surviving in the North American climate. The monkeys made sense; many species of apes and monkeys are adaptable to many climates and are similar to humans in terms of anatomy. The giraffes did not. I remember reading that giraffes can’t live in areas where it goes below 50 degrees F (10 degrees C), yet they’re in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Hello guys, my dog a couple weeks ago had her babies, they are mixed first thing people ask me before i offer them to donate. I did donate 2 but they are still 4 puppies in the house 3 male 1 female and I dont know what to do. they are about 8 weeks old I know here is not the place for medical advice but I need to give them the shots im afraid they might catch a disease, i did a makeshift place for them to stay but they are starting to jump and break the barricade, they look pretty healthy to me

Hey everyone, I’m not so sure what to do. Was outside my apartment by the dumpster and saw these 2 stacked animal cages (1 for dog and 1 for cat) absolutely FULL of poop. Like FULL, everywhere, the entire bottom of the cage is poop. Everything is covered in poop. It seems that they were keeping there animals locked up in these filthy cages and abusing them for long periods of time.

I have seen a grown, white, German shepherd/slight mix of some sort roaming my neighborhood for weeks now, neighbors assure me she's owned, but she is out without anyone watching her, almost every damned morning, without a collar. Aside from her possibility of being hit, or attacking other animals or possibly humans that make her feel unsafe (she's fairly friendly, originally a little cautious but warms up quickly) she is very obviously unfixed.
