Found what seems to be a fledgling sparrow, and I know you aren’t meant to move them, however the place it was at happened to be where my dog is and where stray cats seem to sneak through.

However, during a storm the chains that kept it anchored broke off and the raft is now stranded on the shore, accessible to stray dogs and not used for breeding. Last but not least, there were three species of shrikes, Red-backed , Lesser Grey and at least 2 Masked Shrikes , possibly 2 more, an entire family (not all were showing so well).

On the other hand, it seems there is a better chance of getting some strays and really rare birds, such as the Ryukyu Minivet described in my last post. The famous Electropop Duo, “The Eurasian Tree Sparrows” Giving us their best thoughtful look. Autumn also means thrushes.

Back in the old place, there were more birds in the nearby coffee farm but it wasn’t easy to bird because I couldn’t see it from my door and there were stray dogs. The bird we hope most to see is the endemic Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow although Mary wants to see a Barn Owl just as much.

Sure, Miami and the Florida Keys do not boast any endemics ( ‘Cape Sable’ Seaside Sparrow is close) at the species level. Northern strays include Razorbill , Common Eider , Lapland Longspur, and many more within the city limits of Miami. However, few realize how unique and how good the birding can be here.

Standing with a mug of tea you can spend ours watching a continuous stream of woodpeckers, sparrows, buntings, finches, robins, thrushes, come and go as they grab beakfulls of seed, nuts, fat and insects. It lacks native finches, or even seed eating specialists like finches, sparrows or buntings. There are no woodpeckers.
