Serendip Sanctuary, Victoria

Serendip Sanctuary is a 250 ha protected area that is near the You Yangs and the small town of Lara, Victoria. It is free to enter Serendip Sanctuary and as you drive or walk up the road into the parking area there are opportunities to see kangaroos and wallabies as you can see above. The sanctuary is open from 8am-4pm daily.

Mainland island sanctuaries are popular in New Zealand for any number of reasons. Orokonui Sanctuary’s headquarters and reserve. I’ve written before about such projects in Taranaki and Wellington. Two weekends ago I had the chance to visit another such project, Orokonui, near the southern city of Dunedin.

For 3-4 days, opt for the hills, Tresnjica Griffon Vulture Sanctuary and the nearby Tara Mountain National Park with 140 species (not too much, but with Hazel Grouse , Ural , Pygmy and Tengmalm’s Owls , White-backed and Three-toed Woodpeckers among them). The “Rufa” Red Knot is now protected under the Endangered Species Act

Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the “Rufa” population of Red Knot ( Calidris canutus rufa ) as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).
