A British student studying in Porto, Portugal, was handing out leaflets in front of "Beigel," a fur shop. ANIMAL is a Portuguese animal rights group that had already been having weekly actions directed at this particular shop, so they were not surprised by the venom of the owner's response. With its striking combination of colour rings I suspected that it would be easy to find out more about this particular bird, and I was right. The rings revealed that one of the birds had been ringed as an adult in Portugal, the other as a chick in Spain’s Ebro delta, where the biggest colony of these gulls is to be found.

So though I visited Lynford, I didn’t see a Hawfinch on this occasion as I wasn’t there at the right time, though I did meet a number of hopeful Hawfinch hunters (HHHs), none of whom reported a sighting. Sadly, many fail, as the finches favour the hornbeams for roosting, so are best seen at dawn or dusk, rarely in the middle of the day.
