Still, I did manage to see a decent 65 species in 6 hours, and many of them stayed quite close to me, allowing for some nice photos. Let’s see if you agree: I liked some of the photos as much for their backgrounds as for the bird itself, such as this Lincoln Sparrow foraging among duckweed, algae, Ficus fruits, and Jacaranda flowers.

Of course, with the Drakensberg still not that far away from Capetown and South African explorers obviously very fond of saving mental energy by simply starting bird names with the word “cape”, we have the Cape Robin-Chat … … the Cape Rock Thrush … … the Cape Sparrow … … and the Cape Weaver.

Which is exactly why, on my first stop, I found myself surrounded by a species that, in theory, should have not been there. I usually see this species only on their trip south, in August and September. I used to miss this species entirely, because they can be confused with the lake’s more numerous Long-billed Dowitchers.

This is common with life-threatening situations and expected; any ancient ancestors who would have not paid heed to close calls would have likely been quickly and savagely selected from the gene pool (just trying to pet the Short-faced Bear again…). These smart looking birds are tropical sparrows.

This is often the case in birds – for the young birds, it is more important to be invisible than to impress the other birds of the same species.
