I wanted Penguins. The African Penguins (formerly known as Jackass Penguins) were pretty much a “gotcha”, but I was still tremendously excited to see them on two field trips–the Boulders colony by False Bay and at the Stony Point colony at Betty’s Bay in the Western Cape. And Sunbirds.

Finally, the Similan Islands are perhaps one of the most beautiful islands in the world and form a stunning backdrop to this species, one of the loveliest pigeons in the world. Final choice is African (aka Jackass) Penguin because I had such a wonderful time watching these creatures at Betty’s Bay and Boulders Beach.

This makes Grebes vulnerable to climate change and the predation of invasive species. It is easy to see how Minks set lose in a welcoming habitat could eat an entire species.

Sadly the great gannet colonies during the July to October period to protect the birds, but if you head up to Boundary Stream you’ll find a good mix of lowland and mountain forest where active management is keeping forest birds going. Yellow-eyed Penguin at Otago Peninsula. A good place to see the enigmatic Kokako.

Marlborough Sounds has a pretty special endemic, the King Shag , a species that isn’t just endemic to New Zealand but endemic to just the Sounds. The reason Alan had come was to film another endemic, a critically endangered species, the Orange-fronted Parakeet. Then came Blumine Island, and my number one target for the day.

It was a Benguela Nino year, and pelagic seabirds were in super-abundance in the south eastern Atlantic, with the total of species by variety and number exceeding all expectations for the birders on the inaugural trip as we pitched and wallowed about in the rolling swells on our way out to the trawling grounds.

The birdlife in the Cape is nothing short of spectacular, with a healthy dose of charismatic endemic species. Over 40 species of South African endemics can be found in the Cape – Cape Sugarbirds, Cape Rockjumpers, Orange-breasted Sunbirds to name but a few. An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick.

Why this one city alone would be named for birds, in this country of 1,800 species, is unclear, but it could very well be a designation inspired by the nearby Islas Ballestas, an uninhabited island group just offshore from Pisco and home to enormous breeding colonies of Humboldt Penguins , Inca Terns , Peruvian Boobies , and many other species.

Plenty of parks and forests have been protected even as the city grew. On the subject of parrots, I have seen no less than ten species of parrot in the suburbs of Sydney, from the massive Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo to the beautiful Crimson Rosella. The city is a very green one. The native bush survives in places as well.
