In Australia, ornithologists have finally gotten their hands on a Night Parrot , the first such capture in more than 100 years. By tagging the Parrot and monitoring the area with remote cameras, scientists hope to learn more about this species and how to keep it safe. The bird is so rare and elusive that it was thought to be extinct.

I see a flock or two of Crimson-fronted Parakeets every morning and often have flyovers of Orange-chinned Parakeets , White-crowned Parrot , and White-fronted Parrot. These are birds like Gray Hawk, Great Kiskadee, and Chestnut-capped Warblers calling from the undergrowth. Nope, none of these are escapes, all are native, wild birds.

At the top, we rounded a corner and found not only the sun in all its glory, but Orange-winged Parrots and what seemed to be an ever-increasing number of Guianan Trogons. However, the rasping call of a Squirrel Cuckoo got our attention. Squirrel Cuckoo. First there was one, then two. White-shouldered Tanager. Blue Dacnis.

Add Common Tody-Flycatcher and several Hoffmann’s Woodpeckers and Brown-hooded Parrots to that picture, among many others. Yet, with a coffee in one and binoculars in my other hand, the long ago learned lessons started to return. But I am talking birds only! Quite a few mammals come out in the open to steal bananas left for the birds.

In addition to those birds and the Squirrel Cuckoo pictured above, the following are some of the more common hedgerow species of Costa Rica. Although more than one parrot and parakeet can forage in hedgerows, this long-tailed green bird is the most common. Red-billed Pigeon are common in much of Costa Rica. Crimson-fronted Parakeet.

A Yellow-crowned Parrot digs in. I’ve noted at least nine species of reptiles and amphibians, even our native opossum and squirrel. As a rule, any tree which sprung up at the fenceline was left alone – as it was highly likely it was planted there by bird droppings. Of course, various species of bats as well.
