I know it is a bit unfair to the species, but it makes me recall the description of one man`s appearance in one of my favorite Raymond Chandler novels (“above the sky-blue gabardine slacks he wore a two-tone leisure jacket which would have been revolting on a zebra”). Zebra Doves , Tree Sparrows , Pacific Swallows , Pink-necked Pigeons , Yellow-vented Bulbuls , Asian Koel , Spotted Dove , Rock Dove , Red Junglefowl , Oriental White Eyes and Black-naped Orioles were soon on our list. Also on the scene were a diversity of common doves and pigeons: Rock Pigeon , Spotted Dove , Zebra Dove , and Pink-necked Green Pigeon. The bird I’m most proud of, though, is not the Chinese Egret but rather an owl I found by myself, a far too uncommon occurrence.

On my recent visit I managed to see specialties like Spotted Eagle Owls , Swee Waxbills , Cape Sugarbirds , Malachite Sunbirds and Cape Francolins. Spotted Eagle Owl. The gardens are so bird rich books have been written about what can be seen in them. Cape of Good Hope. Fynbos flowers are highlight of the cape. Boulders Beach.

We are on the go until usually around 1:30 give or take a herd of zebras blocking the road. I have managed to find two owls, the first was this pair of Verreaux’s Eagle-owls. By the time you see this in the United States, I will have had a full week to explore this amazing area, and the wildlife that calls this home.

The Seychelles Scops Owl and Seychelles White-eye prefer the higher elevations on Mahe which were cloaked in low cloud during my stay which reduced my realistic target to 5 species. Red Fody , Madagascar Dove and Zebra Dove were all abundant. How easy was that?
