Mostly the ducks were Red-breasted Merganser and Greater Scaup , the two most prevalent species on the pond, but there were a few other birds mixed in as well. Here’s a Red-bellied Woodpecker on an upside down suet feeder made of recycled plastic. They are clinging birds and use the technique on branches and tree trunks.

I live in upstate New York where only one of these two species occurs. Perhaps one with a name tag on its breast would help. Better yet, I want to invent a new generation of binoculars and scopes. and the species name will appear. I still prefer to use the field markings as the decider between the species.
