An April Weekend of New York City Birding

On Saturday I met up with Seth and we headed out to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge where we nearly froze to death and I refused to wear gloves because it is April and gloves aren’t necessary. Spotting 57 species of birds in the couple of hours we put in to seeking out birds was never so ho-hum in my life. How exciting.

Tundra Swan at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

Late Saturday afternoon a Tundra Swan was reported from the south end of the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. A regional rarity around New York City, Tundra Swans are only regular at Hook Pond in Suffolk County, way out on the eastern end of Long Island. I didn’t see any of the dabbling ducks dabble.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird Nest at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

And it is even less frequent in New York City where we only have one species of hummingbird, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird , and they don’t nest very often. How many species can you identify singing in the background? It is not every day that you get the chance to see a hummingbird’s nest.
