Northern Mockingbirds watched us from the limbs of giant Live Oaks, and Downy Woodpeckers looked for insects along the rough trunks. The Mississippi River also boasted great birding opportunities. Clearly House Sparrows are common here too, as a graffiti outline was painted near the famous Magazine Street!

March was very slow so I took the time to enjoy the common birds , especially woodpeckers and turkeys. I was pleased to add a new woodpecker to my Queens list too. I also appreciated Mississippi Kites not too far from my job, great birds on the coast of Queens , and more wood-warblers. Indigo Bunting.

Bearded Woodpecker – Chloropicus namaquus. Chestnut-colored Woodpecker – Celeus castaneus. Golden-tailed Woodpecker – Campethera abingoni. Golden-naped Woodpecker – Melanerpes chrysauchen. Lineated Woodpecker – Dryocopus lineatus. Mississippi Kite – Ictinia mississippiensis.

Eventually, it was time to head back upstream and we counted more birds, an Osprey here, a group of migrating raptors there with a late Mississippi Kite , Swainson’s Hawks , and a couple other birds. More forest species were seen in the hotel gardens including Cinnamon and Rufous-winged Woodpeckers , tanagers, and other species.
