We call it a “mouse gradation year” I was not able to find a catchy English term for “gradation year” – it’s what happens when a certain species showing population cycles reaches a peak year. In Germany, our most common large mammalian predator is the Red Fox Vulpes vulpes.

Furthermore, the total population in Hemis National Park is estimated at 50-60 individuals, making the park an important genetic reservoir for this species which is classified on the IUCN’s Red Data List as Endangered. The huge Argali, another species of wild sheep, also occur here. Wolves can be encountered anywhere in the park.

I was planning a trip to South Africa, I had about five days to fill, I wanted to get a bunch of desert species (particularly the Springbok – not a bird) in a way that wasn’t too hard to reach from Johannesburg. The park also has Cheetahs and Painted Wolves (and while I didn’t see the later, they are fairly reliable).

Where I live, there are two species of lemmings, the Brown Lemming ( Lemmus trimucronatus ) and the Collared Lemming ( Dicrostonyx groenlandicus ). Lemming populations famously wax and wane, and with them go the fortunes of Snowy Owls , and a number of other Arctic predators. A Collared Lemming on a Beat Writer’s hand.

Decades later, Richard Pough’s Audubon Bird Guide, Eastern Land Birds (I happily own the 1948 edition) included nest and egg descriptions for each species as well.
