The topic was the concept of humans as predators, or hunters, or really, eaters of meat, and I was discussing the many ways in which people misconceived this notion. Even though this referred to a period after the supposed “scavenging” phase, it lent support to the idea of a stepwise evolution of the ability to hunt.

Survival rates of chicks increase when there are helpers present – and if in captivity this is not an option, humans can also take the place of helpers ( source ). Apparently, the dissimilis (“unlike, different”) refers to the difference between the male and the female of the species. ” ( source ).

The system was intended as a hunter-centric model, both guided by and benefitting consumptive interests. Given that few hunters actually consume coyotes, wolves, cougars, and except for a few individuals, even bears, it is obviously a “waste” of wildlife to shoot or trap these animals just for “fun” 2. .”

There are many more factors than I imagined: compass errors, wind drift, overshooting, extreme weather and irruptions, natural dispersal, and human-driven vagrancy. Some birders may want to carefully read the chapter on human-driven vagrancy, which takes up the question of ship-assisted vagrancy. Next time, I’ll know why.

Similar to the (fortunately now gradually changing) situation among humans in China, these birds seem to prefer males over females. So, I can only give you the sanitized version of the joke, in which humans have been replaced by birds. My late father had a few jokes that he liked to repeat frequently, which in itself was kind of funny.

By the way, and for point of reference) there are some 47 million active American birders. There is evidence that toxoplasma leads, in humans, to an elevated risk of mental illness and depression. The traditional, supposedly humane answer to the glut of feral cats has been institution of “TNR” programs – trap, neuter, return.

The Blue Whistling Thrush is presumably named for its loud human-like whistling, and possibly for being blue. The Latin name “frontalis” (meaning, as you can guess, something like “frontal”) referring to the distinct black forehead makes more sense. The White-cheeked Partridge is classified as Near Threatened.
