The White-rumped Shama is a South Asia species – consequently, the HBW mostly discusses its introduced population in Hawaii. The White-crowned Forktail is the largest among them.

Now that Hawaii is in the ABA Area , the next additions should be Puerto Rico and the U.S. The Hawaii vote made it clear that that the ABA Area is about political borders, not geographical or ecological ones, and the two Caribbean territories have long been part of the United States. He analogized the change to adding Hawaii to the ABA Area, which is puzzling since that modest change was preceded by years of debate, a membership referendum (in 2012), and a formal vote (in 2016). Was there confusion that impacted data collection or research or birding? There are surely costs to change. Is ornithology more inclusive?

Strangely, the eBird entry for this bird talks in detail about its distribution on Hawaii, even though it has only been introduced there. So, the birds on Tianmashan may well be the descendants of captive birds.

( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded.

And also, the AOU officially recognized the new species Bryan’s Shearwater ( Puffinus bryani ), based on a reevaluation of a specimen collected in 1963 in Hawaii. Whether and where Bryan’s Shearwater still survives is unknown.

A bit surprisingly (at least to me), the Kalij Pheasant has been introduced and established as a gamebird in Hawaii. This turned out to be nice for one researcher who thus could do the research for her Ph.D. Interestingly, in her work, the researcher found that the birds live in small groups dominated by a single male.
