In fact, the two groups appear to belong near parrots and passerines, which are now thought to be sister clades. But what no major checklist has yet done (to my knowledge) is to take the next step and rearrange the order in which these groups of birds are presented. Some of this should sound familiar. And, I started daydreaming about encountering something a little different, maybe a Horned Frog, Ceratophrys cornuta, a large, squat green and brown frog of South America, with a wide mouth large enough to eat other frogs as well as reptiles. But, within the frog group there is a tremendous range of diversity.

This is more than eBird reports–a checklist generated from the citizen science database lists only 1,413 species. But, the numbers are quite large, and the birds organized in groupings that, for the most part, make it an easy process to figure out which Antwren (or Woodcreeper or Seedeater) is which.

The second thing to note is that this is an excellent and courageous book that tackles a group of birds whose field identification has stumped the most skilled birders. The book expands field guide boundaries with its narrow focus on two genera (groups) with a bonus Tufted Flycatcher thrown in for good measure.

In 1996, several pipit specimens were collected for DNA analysis and it turned out that there was not one, but two new species to science in this sample! Within many of these groups, species are further divided into Old World and New World categories. What year was the Red-footed Falcon seen in Massachusetts? This can be confusing.
