Greyhound skin is very thin. The greyhound people tell you that, not to mention it's pretty obvious. The original diagnosis was severe nerve root compression at L7/S1, and I bet if we did an MRI right now we'd find not only that, but some kind of injury further up in the thoracic region due to semi-regular hopping.

And I received confirmation of something I've known since 2004, when we adopted retired racing greyhound, Violet Rays: That there's sort of a critical period for dog-behavior acquisition, and if it's missed, the dog isn't likely to mature into the type of loving being whose behavior we've come to associate with "pet" dogs.

Brief commentary follows this e-mail I received regarding greyhounds, animal rights and Ireland. Dear ARAN Members, I remember as a young child throwing stones and sticks at a terrified greyhound that slept in a back shed a few blocks from where I live. He would not return for many hours.

The result is that on one level he knows that hurting sentient nonhumans isn't right, but if it's done in a certain respectful way (oxymoron, anyone?) He romanticizes his childhood usage of animals as if that was the right way to do it , and he longs for those days. it's not so bad. on my schedule and for my palate.

So there was no traffic, no noise, and each day we awoke to the drama of the creatures who lived right outside our door. Now I have the drama of the feral cats and of course the greyhounds. It wasn't much--clusters of mushroom-like townhouses that are ubiquitous in Florida--but it was on a lake. And a dead end.

Just in case you were wondering what an 85-lb red fawn greyhound looks like from the back with a couple dozen acupuncture needles in him. We went this route because he isn't putting weight on his back right leg anymore (you can even see the muscle atrophy--look at the difference--it's not because of the angle). I've had those.

The only one I had ever seen before had barely escaped being hit by the Greyhound Bus I had been travelling from Darwin to Perth on a decade previously. Another nice find right outside the centre was a Emu, although it was so tame it can hardly be called a find. This was certainly a more leisurely view!

I chose a cow for Sky's first stuffed animal, and I hope that she will grow up to honor and respect the lives of cows the same way she will honor and respect the lives of greyhounds. Emily has taken to sleeping right next to wherever Sky is. And speaking of the other creatures of the household, Violet is indifferent, as usual.
