Looks like a scaup of some sort, but it’s not quite right My bird certainly had the peaked crown characteristic of a Lesser Scaup; the feathers on its head looked black at a distance, while closer inspection revealed a purple sheen. Many years ago a friend of mine kept a small but varied collection of ducks and geese.

Little Big Year – Week 36: Southern New Mexico hotspots.

Most of the time, I know enough about an area, or have done some research into what is found there, that I am pleasantly surprised at best. This 57,331 acre refuge was set aside as a critical wintering location for tens of thousands of Geese, Ducks and Sandhill Cranes. Right in our camp, we found Ladder-backed Woodpeckers.

I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. I flew into Denver from Mexico. If birders were as inept finding flying things our life lists would be very short indeed. And now I did.
