There are hordes of fowl here (fowl of the water) in winter, with geese having the most prominent presence. Along with Snows, Greater White-fronted Goose are one of the most abundant species here. Geese, of course, are known to be down to get down with other species, because they’re kinky like that. Do you see?

This mainly affects domestic fowl, and in this sense is not a topic central to 10,000 Birds. And, of course, the reputation of certain species of birds as troublemakers for humans is a problem in bird conservation, so this is worth watching. H5N2 is a bird influenza virus that is making news. Should we be concerned about H5N2?

When scientists created a sense of threat by playing another species alarm call, the parents increased their efforts in feeding the grounded birds, but not the birds in the nest. Maybe it is endemic to domestic fowl and is being spread among those birds in markets, but perhaps it is in wild birds, most likely waterfowl, instead or as well.

The very first thing we notice about this large member of the Galliformes is that there is a wild version and a domestic version, and although the two are rather different, they are both given the same species name, Meleagris gallopavo. This is not entirely unknown among domestic animals, but many domesticates have no living wild version.

It is one of the ancestors of domestic fowl. Other species I can recognize are colloquially called crocodile bark tree, due to the bark pattern, and paper bark. February 2013. In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road.

Here are some things I’ve learned from the Peterson Reference Guide to Owls of North America and the Caribbean by Scott Weidensaul: The Burrowing Owl is the only North American owl species where the male is larger than the female, albeit, only slightly larger. The 39 owls include five endemic Caribbean species.
