I know it is a bit unfair to this Purple-crested Turaco , but I always wanted to use this Raymond Chandler quotation on a bird: “He wore a two-tone leisure jacket which would have been revolting on a zebra.” Not too many raptors, but at least an African Fish Eagle. The photo shows less than 0.000001% of the global population.

The "Zebra Mantis Shrimp" is among the most egregious examples as it is (1) not a zebra, (2) not a mantis, and (3) not a shrimp. Some examples: - Lion fish, 1 point. (It It is NOT a lion; is a fish.) - Whale shark, 1 point. However, it is a wasp.

So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. The African Fish Eagle was a great first day bird. The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing.

We encountered a Grey-headed Fish Eagle flying through the area, which kindly landed in a tree and allowed for photography! Grey-headed Fish Eagle. Although the tide was in we were still able to observe several species of shorebird on Pulau Sekudu. It proved to be a good decision.

Zebra-tailed Lizards, Splotch-sided Lizards, Orange-bellied Skinks and Desert Iguanas are quite common in this area, so the American Kestrels were too. The desert flowers at the edge of our camp in were in bloom, attracting the Hooded Orioles, Costa’s and Xanthus’s Hummingbirds.

A Lesser Crested Tern patrolled above waiting for a chance to dart in to snatch a fish. Red Fody , Madagascar Dove and Zebra Dove were all abundant. The balcony proved productive again the next morning with a Seychelles Bulbul and the Seychelles Swiflet was found in a small flock as we took a tour of Mahe. How easy was that?

Also on the scene were a diversity of common doves and pigeons: Rock Pigeon , Spotted Dove , Zebra Dove , and Pink-necked Green Pigeon. That just makes the Buffy Fish Owl peering through the trees with its cold yellow stare that much sweeter. Of course, I’d already encountered tons of Javan Mynas mixed with a few Commons.
