Called home to the Oregon Coast to operate the family motel, in her free time she leads Tufted Puffin walks and escapes to guide at birding festivals and explore the world as often as possible. To me, their silhouette looks like a large shorebird or miniature Ostrich, they are good-sized birds with thin necks and legs and large heads.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. Ostriches originated in Asia.

Anyway, I was much keener to see this kingfisher than the Emu (who I consider to be a bit of an underprivileged ostrich). Identifying White-eyes in Australia is easier than here in China, as the Silvereye is the only family member present in most parts of the country.

People ascribe near mythic status to the members of the family Delphinidae (and other related families). Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. Which has always mystified me slightly.
