A large family of White-crested Helmetshrikes , sounding like electrical toys, formed a flock within a flock, while the Black Cuckooshrike was happy to search for caterpillars alone. Long-billed Crombecs are members of the African warbler family. Even a Leopard Tortoise dropped by! White-crested Helmetshrike. Blue Waxbill.

These vast and rugged lands of savanna, hills, gorges and rivers still protect some of Ethiopia’s largest extant herds of typical African savanna game, including African Elephant, African Buffalo, Giraffe, Lion, Leopard, African Wild Dog and numerous species of grazers. We spotted a young Leopard and his mother in Mago National Park.

This is the place, after all, that people see Sunda Clouded Leopards! Almost as soon as we left the grounds we came a cross a feeding flock of Pygmy Ibon , a minute type of white-eye (already a small family), and then a handful of bizarre looking Dusky Broadbills (they look like they are manically grinning) perched over a river.

So much so that the two species are placed within their own family, Chaetopidae. Even leopards still live here and occasionally terrorize the African Penguin colony at nearby Betty’s Bay. Chaetops frenatus, the Cape variety, is endemic to the mountain fynbos vegetation of the extreme southern Cape and therefore has a small range.

It was Falakhe, who had dragged himself twenty kilometers on two broken legs past Hyaenas, Lions, Leopards and jackals. Like other social animals, his family connections were keeping him alive, as his family was feeding him. But the truth dawned on us as the poor thing collapsed surrounded by adoring pack-mates. No rest though.

Kaziranga National Park is famous for having 80% of the surviving population of the Indian Rhinoceros , as well as being the favourite park of the British royal family, whenever they visit India. Birdwise, it is recommendable year-round, although winters are quite cold.

It’s the only park I have ever been to that not only have I seen all five of the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, African Buffalo, White Rhino and African Elephant) in, but seen them all on the same day. Leopards are also awesome and I saw two at Madikwe. A Shaft-tailed Whydah, a member of a small African family of cuckoo-finches.
