Sandhill Cranes calling somewhere on the south end of the lake, Western Grebes calling to one another, Canada Geese honking away noisily, and somewhere above me, Red-wing Blackbirds roosting in a pine tree called out, in their harsh gargling cry. This is one of several families of Western Grebes stayed out in the middle of the lake all day.

Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.

We had a wonderful family vacation in Germany and the Czech Republic during which I managed to do a bit of birding. Whether it was hawks , terns , seabirds , wood-warblers , shorebirds , geese , falcons , finches , or songbirds and woodpeckers I was there with my camera. fledgling Song Thrush about to be fed. By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! Among them are Dalmatian Pelicans , so big and lazy. The WBW remained elusive like a bear (for me at least – a month ago, Georgos met a mother with two cubs, took a few photos, then dropped down and played dead).

White-necked Heron Little Egret Australian Pelicans have arrived to feed on the fish and can be observed very close to the highway. Australian Pelican Glossy Ibis Most of the Magpie Geese families have moved away from the highway now, but there are still some close to the fence-line.
