A new year, new life and new hope….

We did find a family of Dollarbirds, though and it was the first time I had photographed four together! Royal Spoonbill and Australian Pelicans. Nearby we discovered a family of White-breasted Woodswallows and the young had made it beyond the nest, but were still rather unsteady and fluffy! Magpie Geese. Four Dollarbirds.

The Kerkini Lake, Greece: Dipped One, Got One

By the cliffs we find several Eurasian Crag-Martins and a consolation species – a family of Golden Eagles in the air! The next morning is for the Kerkini Lake, one of the youngest national parks of Greece, protected only ten years ago, in 2006 and inhabited by 11 amphibian, 27 reptilian, 44 mammal and 312 bird species.

The view from Sayer Road used to be very open and offered little protection many years ago and we contributed to the planting of small native trees in 1998 when we lived in Palmerston. There were good numbers of Green Pygmy-geese, Comb-crested Jacana, Great and Intermediate Egrets, Magpie Geese and a family of Black-necked Storks.

Mareeba Wetlands Just north of the town of Mareeba are the Mareeba Wetlands , a large lake reserve that protects both wetlands and northern savannah. If I had more time I could have hiked around to find one of the star attractions, Gouldian Finches , but I had gone there mainly to find two of my target families, storks and cranes.

A visit to Dog Lake

With shore side access limited to the northern end of the lake, that protection allows for a large population of water based birds. This is one of several families of Western Grebes stayed out in the middle of the lake all day. The first was the presence of 10-12 American White Pelicans. Forest Service, on a forest fire crew.

Ringer Anhingas and darters , cormorants and shags , frigatebirds , gannets and boobies , pelicans , and the tropicbirds all share a characteristic found in no other living bird: Their feet are totipalmate.
