Dawn Over the Mighty Rupununi

This places feels almost as if herds of zebra and giraffe are just out of view. It was impossible to not stop when we saw this absolutely gorgeous Aplomado Falcon along the road. The Pakaraima mountains slowly materialize from the darkness, silently encircling the flatness of the savanna.

Geikie Gorge

There were small groups of Double-barred Finches, Zebra Finch and also Crimson Finches. We had White-bellied Cuckoo-shrikes and Grey Fantails in the trees and overhead we observed Brown Falcons, Black Kites, Red-tailed Black Cockatoos, Blue-winged Kookaburras, Red-winged Parrots and Cockatiels. Great Bowerbird bower.

Whistling Kites and Black Kites were active in the area too due to the nearby fire and we observed a Brown Falcon perched in a nearby tree. The highlight of the brief stop was seeing not just Zebra Finch dripping down to drink at the dam, but also Star Finch. It is a lone Magpie Goose and several Horsfield’s Bushlarks.

New Year’s Day birding around Broome

Brown Falcon , Brown Songlark and Horsfield’s Bushlark were the only species surviving in the dry environment. There had been a Nankeen Kestrel near there earlier in the day and just before the storm hit we saw a Peregrine Falcon. The Peregrine Falcon became our 100th bird of the day, but the rain prevented photographs!

Croc and rock birding trip part 1

The quarry was being used as a training ground for a family of five Brown Falcons and they were amazing to watch as they used the quarry walls to hunt. They were able to survive on what little food there was on offer and would no doubt soon be moving on. An almost dry quarry. White-faced Heron. Black-fronted Dotterel.
