It is one of the premiere birding destinations in Europe, where Saker Falcons , Great Bustards , and Black Woodpeckers can be found, to say nothing of Aquatic Warblers , Pygmy Cormorants , and Whiskered Terns. More importantly, I will be seeing and exploring a new country to me and having a grand time!

Each spread presents two birds of a color–Red (Scarlet Tanager and Northern Cardinal), Pink (Greater Flamingo and Roseate Spoonbill), and so one, with the last spread presenting two colors–Black and White (Downy Woodpecker and Black-and-White Warbler). These illustrations by Steve Jenkins are perfect.

This is more than eBird reports–a checklist generated from the citizen science database lists only 1,413 species. Tintaya’s woodpeckers also nicely feature tree (and cactus!) The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

Two weeks later, it was a young math and science teacher from Oregon named Brent who asked me to take him with me. I told him that occasionally, with luck, I might hear a Laughing Falcon there. Not for Steve; he seemed completely satisfied. But I knew that quite a few charismatic species had failed to turn up. Seeing one?
