Over the next few days, I found increasing numbers, goldfinches, juncos, white-throated sparrows. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. I hoped it was an anomaly. Were they always there and I just never noticed? There are far fewer photographs of dead birds than I expected.

Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua. Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow. Buff-fronted Quail-Dove.

Even people with no other interest in wildlife, who couldn’t tell a sparrow from an ostrich (or even a dolphin from a fish) love dolphins. I had my first swim with Inshore Bottlenose Dolphins in Northland’s Bay of Islands back in 2000, and it was a tripy experience. Which has always mystified me slightly.

Birds begin to filter down through this southern part of Central America by August but the biggest avian movement happens during the third and final weeks of October.

The leopards place their kill in a tree, protecting it from poaching by other predators. The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders.
