Formerly, as you can tell from its name, it was a military base, mostly tasked with keeping New York Harbor safe from attack. I was joined on the platform by Luke Musher, a recent transplant to New York City who I met a week earlier in the same location with Doug Gochfeld. And this bird was way out over the water.

After all, when the president is in town you want to pull out all the stops, though I think I might have taken it too far when I tried to convince him that the cicadas had emerged only after hearing that he would be in New York City. Though birds sing because it is a biological imperative I find it hard to believe that they don’t get some basic enjoyment out of the experience as well. For example, the Brown Thrasher at right is one of several singing from the bushes and trees around the West Pond at Jamica Bay Wildlife Refuge. I know I do!

Species that back here in New York either don’t occur or only occur in winter and that necessitate a drive far to the north of New York City were common in the backyard in Breckenridge. My worries were unfounded but I must say it is an interesting experience to have foxes begging by the table.

Fortunately, Tom spotted it flying in and landing in a tree over the house and we all enjoyed scope views of a great bird, a lifer for most of us and Isaac’s 400th bird in New York State! It is my belief that the birds were migrating, though one New York birder suggested that they might have been flying out for some crepuscular feeding. Either way, it was a heck of a sight and another example of why Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is the best place in New York City to see amazing wildlife spectacles.

Many years of experience have been lost. The New York City area’s Christmas Bird Count density is absurd. Compiling a Christmas Bird Count is much more complex, especially for a count that is in a bit of flux as the Queens count is. The Queens count circle is the one in the middle.
