Best Bird of the Weekend (Third of April 2021)

We’re still far from peak passerine passage, but getting closer every day… I had to move my bird feeder from its perfect position this weekend, because of–of course–squirrels. Corey enjoyed getting out on birding outings both mornings of the weekend, and was out in nature with his family both afternoons.

A Suffolk Otter swimming in the Little Ouse river Not all Otter s want to be photographed But this one emerged, though only briefly The otter is, of course, a member of the weasel family.

While I don’t have a lot of experience with tropical terns, I believe that narrows it down to Sandwich Tern ( Thalasseus sandvicensis ), a bird that – while still quite rare in the Northeast – seems to be occurring with greater frequency , along with an increasingly northward incursion of Royal Terns ( Thalasseus maximus ).

Birding Adventure in Mexico Part II: Durango Highway

This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers.

To Spotlight or not to Spotlight?

Sometimes in a forest you’d be forgiven for thinking there was nothing but birds, monkeys and squirrels (and mosquitos, obviously), and then at night you start seeing civets, wallabies, and tarantulas. We toured the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre after dark, and we did it by foot in a group that was just my family and a guide.
