Sadly, the HBW states that the species is “almost extinct in some areas in China owing to hunting and trapping for the cagebird trade and taxidermy” The Maroon Oriole looks much more interesting, though my photos do not really do it full justice. This Great Spotted Woodpecker isn’t even trying to hide its spots.

Given how far Hokkaido is from Europe, it seems a bit surprising how many bird species wintering on this Japanese island have a name starting with “Eurasian” Or how many of these species I have also seen in my parents’ garden in Germany. In science speak, this is named the optimal body mass hypothesis.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. Dead birds are a part of the life of a birder, a feeder of birds, and of bird science.

Starlings, they’ll dutifully explain, are ruthless invasives that have been responsible for the serious declines of several beloved native species, like the Red-headed Woodpecker ( Melanerpes erythrocephalus ) and the Eastern Bluebird ( Sialia sialis ). Good birding and happy drinking! Five out of five stars (Outstanding).

I don’t really know – from my own experience with school bullies or from Jack London’s novels? Finally, the list of birds mentioned in the examples include: Acorn woodpecker, Melanerpes formicivorus. Cactus finch, Geospiza species. Galapagos cactus finch, Geospiza species. How did I know that? Black grouse, Tetrao tetrix.

White-bellied Parrot was one of many target species at either of the canopy towers. ” At first light, many of the larger canopy species commute and call from the canopy: parrots, cotingas, guans, and toucans. Is that far away beeping the call of a Ringed Woodpecker ? 4:30AM: It is time to wake up!

Like any birder visiting a new place, I had a target species list I was hoping to seek out during the one day I had available between business commitments. The experience was marvelous — but it also weighed heavily on me. White-headed Woodpecker. In June, I visited North Dakota for the first time. Brown-headed Nuthatch.
