Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. This protected area is of special importance for migrating waders, of which some 27 species were reported here, including Pied Avocet , Temminck’s Stint , Red-necked Phalarope , Sanderling and Dunlin.
