I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. With one Black Stork near them, some 80 LWfG were foraging in the distance, where the sun was just now clearing the mist. Then 20 more joined them, so I entered 100 in my notebook. Someone had told me a group of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers called this patch of forest home, and we were determined to find out if he was right. No, we didn’t see the woodpeckers we sought, but I was thrilled with everything we did see! As we walked along the road, tall pine trees created a comfortable dappled shade.

Thanks to better protection from hunting, this fancy bird is tame and easy to see at many sites in Costa Rica. Rufous-winged Woodpecker. Endangered and awesome, it’s pretty easy to experience this big parrot in the Pacific lowlands of Costa Rica from Tarcoles north to near Nicaragua. Buff-fronted Quail-Dove.

It was an all around quality experience. This remarkable area is best know for its huge wall that was used for centuries to protect the city from invasion, but for me, the Conwy RSPB refuge was fantastic. We were visited by a couple of Great Spotted Woodpeckers. The biggest highlight of their back yard was a Eurasian Nuthatch.

Second of all, Lewis’s Woodpeckers are birds of the west and they rarely stray to New York State. So you can imagine our disappointment when we crawled out of the car after our trip to find out that Mike was in fact relaxing in the warm kitchen and had no idea where the woodpecker was! Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo. Some of the birds were astonishingly confiding, including a Rufous -capped Babbler foraging for insects, a tiny Rufous Piculet ( a diminutive type of woodpecker) and a very bold Black-and-yellow Broadbill. Now that’s a tropical woodpecker… Crimson-winged Woodpecker. All in all, a memorable Malaysian experience. And though I didn’t see an elephant, they lurk in Panti… this is an elephant fence protecting a palm plantation. I can’t imagine birding Singapore without making a run to Panti Forest.

My own trip was not an intensive birding experience, and August is clearly not the most productive month. This protected area is of special importance for migrating waders, of which some 27 species were reported here, including Pied Avocet , Temminck’s Stint , Red-necked Phalarope , Sanderling and Dunlin.
