Follow-up from the Utah scandal in which shelter animals were being sold for research purposes. The Standard-Examiner of Ogden said Wednesday that the county will pay $17,732 to the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The settlement provides limited protections for the county from further litigation.

And of course, some Chinese researchers worked on the complete mitochondrial genome of the Greater Coucal. Are these the paper mills one occasionally reads about in relation to Chinese research papers? This bee-eater is another bird species with a somewhat underwhelming work ethic.
