Fortunately for the buntings, they seem to detect most cuckoo eggs smuggled in (75% in one study). A study found that for Plain Prinia , egg characteristics in a mainland China location with many cuckoos make it much easier to spot cuckoo eggs than in a Taiwan location with few cuckoos ( source ). Better safe than sorry.

Great Fall Migration Weekend in New York City

Though sparrows tend to be the main focus of mid-to-late October birding here in New York City there are still plenty of other birds to see like the Eastern Phoebe up above. Kind of a dull example of the species but it was still a Lark Sparrow ! Ammodramus sparrows are my favorite sparrows. More sparrow!

eBird states that “small white patch on throat is not obvious and difficult to see” And they use a photo that I submitted as main illustration, so they must be right. And yes, sparrows in areas with polluted air are less healthy. It just looks stupid. Thank god that this does not apply to humans.

What to Do at High Island When the Winds are South

It stops those thousands of migrating birds flying across the Gulf of Mexico and directs them right onto the trees, fields, sanctuaries, beaches along the Bolivar Peninsula, where they hopefully find food and fresh water. Seaside Sparrow. I imagined walking right up to them. High Island in April requires Weather, so I was told.

And for the first time, I saw a Bronzed Cowbird (which lays its eggs in other birds’ nests) checking out one of these nests. This female Streak-backed Oriole is the rightful nest owner. Yellow-winged Caciques and Streak-backed Orioles were busy building their impressive hanging nests. The scene of the crime, as it were.

While I can’t convince myself to be excited about my First-Of-Year House Sparrows , almost anything else is exciting. In spite of our proximity, it spent a good while positioned as if it had eggs there. So, as they say here in Mexico, we got out of bed on the right side! Was it practicing?

Or maybe they are quite excited about clarifying that Muscicapa latirostris is the wrong name for this bird while Muscicapa dauurica is right. An example is this study showing that indeed, cuckoo eggs are stronger than the eggs of the host species. Apparently, the authors of this paper think so.
